Jibilika Dance Trust will be hosting its second dance workshop dubbed #Strictly4Girls in a space of two weeks at their newly established Jibilika Dance Academy in Harare.
The workshop being facilitated by Samantha Werner from the US together with local female choreographers Ndomu Chipendo and Nyasha Madzinga will also act as a commemoration for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence which run from the November 25 to December 10.
According to Jibilika Dance Trust boss Plot Mhako at least 50 young dancers have confirmed their participation at the workshop.
“#Strictly4Girls has at least fifty young female dancers confirmed to participate and Jibilika has roped in Wikipedia Zimbabwe and Girl Child Creativity Project organisations that will seize the opportunity to discuss the power of dance in communicating the rights of girls and dance as a tool for girl child empowerment while at the same time interrogating the stereotypes attached to girls who take dance as a profession,” said Mhako.
“Traditionally female dancers are viewed with contempt, objectified and subjected to demeaning sexual stereotypes. This form of emotional and psychological violence discourages a lot of women who dream to take dance as a pastime or profession.”
He said the program aimed at breaking stereotypes, inspiring girls to dance, expressing themselves, boosting their confidence and sending a message against gender based violence.
