Condolence messages continue to pour in following the deaths of veteran journalist Oliver Gawe.

In a statement from Zimbabwe National Editors Forum (Zinef) Zinef acting chairperson Njabulo Ncube said it is with sadness that the forum has learnt of the untimely death of veteran journalist Oliver Gawe.

“He passed away last night (Sunday) in Maseru, Lesotho where he had just started working for a Lesotho localnewspaper.

Although details are still sketchy, information emanating from Maseru indicates he had a heart problem and high blood pressure.

“His wife is on her way to Maseru.

“Gawe was a very dedicated media person after cutting his teeth at Zimpapers where he rose through the different ranks in the newsroom.

He joined the Herald in the mid-80s, as part of a group of young journalists taking over from the then-white dominated paper.

Gawe also worked as deputy editor with the now defunct Parade Magazine.

At the time of his death he was treasurer of Zinef.

Condolence messages from colleagues Francis Mukuzunga “Sad news indeed...the Zim family here is trying all it can to assist. We'll keep you all posted.”

Sam Mawokomatanda “Very sad news indeed. Vato was in the 1981/82 Journalism class at ZIMCO (before it was moved to Poly). He started working for Ziana and was based in Mutare. He then moved to the Herald where he rose through the ranks to News Editor. He then went to work for the Tobacco Board. From then I lost touch until recently when I heard he had moved to Lesotho. May His Dear Soul Rest In Eternal Peace.”

Tawanda Majoni “That is sad news indeed. He was a nice chap, easy going and mature.”

Privilege Musvanhiri “This is sad mudhara OG is gone. May his soul rest in eternal peace”.
