Professor Jonathan Moyo’s deputy Godfrey Gandawa will spend the night in custody at Harare Central Remand pending determination of his application for bail at the Harare Magistrates Court.
This was after Harare Magistrate Vakai Chikwekwe had to postpone his initial hearing for want of time.
Gandawa through his company Fuzzy Technologies is accused of having defrauded ZIMDEF of more than US$100 000 after inflating the number of computers he allegedly purchased on behalf of the ministry.
He also faces charges of criminal abuse of office and corruptly concealing an interest in a transaction from his principal and money laundering.
The duo allegedly connived with ZIMDEF boss Fredrick Mandizvidza, and ZIMDEF Principal Director Finance Nicholas to fleece the parastatal of more than US$450 000.
The investigating officer in the matter Lovemore Findi took to the stand to strongly oppose the admission of Dr Gandawa to bail on the basis that he is likely to interfere with witnesses, most of who are his subordinates at the ministry.
His lawyer Bernard Chidziva advanced to the court that the Deputy Minister had co-operated since Day One of the investigations and he was not aware of the so-called witnesses, hence he could not interfere with investigations.
