The Sun Will Rise Again premiere Wednesday

A play that will explore issues of early and forced child marriage will kick off Wednesday at the hub of theatre in Zimbabwe Theatre in The Park in Harare Gardens.
The Sun Will Rise Again is a thought provoking play and will from June 29th June to 1st July. This is an adaptation by Raisedon Baya of George Mujajati’s Ordinary Level set book with the same title. The play tells the story of a mother and her daughter who are caught up in abusive relationships. It also explores forced child marriages and the drivers of the practice. These include traditional social norms, poverty, lack of education, gender discrimination, greed and cultural practices such as pledging children for marriage, ritual killing and appeasing vengeful spirits with child brides. The Sun Will Rise Again is a story of Fatima who passes grade seven with flying colors but is forced to leave school and marry Takundwa, a school dropout who is at the mercy of Nyati, a businessman with political ambitions. In a plot with many unexpected twists and turns, Nyati then convinces Takundwa to kill his youngest daughter for ritual purposes and later forces Takundwa to marry off his daughter Sofia to him. The cast has director: Innocent G. Mwapangira holds BA Honours and Master’s degree in Theatre Arts in 2008. He joined the teaching staff of the Theatre Arts Department 2009. From 2009 to 2011 he has directed many theatrical plays, including The Government Inspector, Nyaradzo: The Spirit of Nehanda, Macbeth: The Oracle of the Weird Sisters and Miss Julie. Two of his plays, Waiting for Godot and In Her Shadows have featured at the Women’s Arts Festival. Munyaradzi Mtomba is a Theatre Arts Student at the University of Zimbabwe and has acted in a number of productions as part of his degree program including the play No good Friday he also stage lights for Celebration Centre, Cross culture, Campus ignite (UZ). To date he has designed stage lights for Mavambo (play), Hell hath no fury (play), Red Couch Series. Among others Rumbidzo Gunduza and JoAnne Chidochangu Tenga are studying theatre arts at the University of Zimbabwe.

Dalma Chiwereva is one of the best actresses Zimbabwe has bred. Dalma started acting at a very young age at primary level. Her first exposure on television was in a NAMA award winning television drama Izoloizolo as she took on the leading role as Nodumo. She has also featured in a number of short & feature films, to advertisements billboards & musical videos working with the crème de la creme of Zimbabwean music Jah Prayzah. Dalma was the Mistress in a play staged at Reps Theatre Main Stage during HIFA (Harare International Festival of the Arts), 2013.
